Austin permits, fire rules and COI for a photo booth
Austin publishes its event rules, so we can plan the paperwork early and keep your setup on time.
- City permit tier. The Austin Center for Events lists photobooths, generators, tents and display vehicles as Tier 1 items, with a review of 3 business days. A booth inside a hotel ballroom follows the hotel's own rules.
- Tents. An outdoor booth under a tent may need an Austin Fire Department permit: tents over 700 sq ft, or over 400 sq ft with sidewalls or near a building.
- Group size. Outdoor events of 50 or more people apply to the fire department 30 days ahead.
- Palmer Events Center. A covered booth over 100 sq ft needs approval from the venue and the AFD Fire Marshal, and aisles stay 10 ft wide.
- COI at city venues. Palmer and other city venues want the certificate 60 days before the first contract day, with the City of Austin as additional insured.
- Labor. Texas is a right-to-work state. The venue's contract, not a union, decides who handles freight at the dock.
Questions about photo booths in Austin
Does the city have to approve a photo booth at our outdoor Austin event?
Only when the event itself needs a city permit, such as a street party or a park event. Then the booth goes on your Austin Center for Events application as a Tier 1 item, reviewed in 3 business days. A booth in a hotel or a private venue follows that venue's rules instead.
Can the booth run outdoors in the Austin heat?
Yes, in the shade with an evening start. Austin averages 123 days a year at 90°F or more, mostly from May 30 to September 18. The mild windows are March 1 to April 14 and October 24 to November 21. At the Capital Group summer social for the company's employees, we set up shade tents, power and internet before the booth went live.
Can you bring a photo booth to our SXSW brand house?
Yes. Send the address and your opening hours as soon as you sign the space, because crews and hotel rooms run short that week. Short notice can work: we brought a surf simulator for EF Academy 2 days after the school booked it.
Will guest photos send at Palmer Events Center?
Yes, if we plan the line. Palmer supplies internet and power only through the venue, so we add a wired connection for the booth to your order list.
Should we pick the AI mirror or the 360 booth?
The AI photo booth gives each guest a styled portrait with your logo, printed or texted. The 360 booth records a slow-motion clip on a spinning arm. For a Rainey Street party, the 360 clip spreads faster. For a sales event at the Fairmont, the AI portrait with sign-up brings back contacts.
