Virtual Team Building Games for Remote Teams

Book virtual team building that gets cameras on: a live host, small teams in breakout rooms and one scoreboard everybody checks between rounds. Your people join from home or the office on the video platform your company already uses.

Why a virtual team building game works

Fun virtual team building activities give remote coworkers a reason to talk about something other than the sprint board.

On most calls, a few people talk and the rest listen. A virtual team building game flips that. Small teams of four to six get a shared problem and a clock, so everyone has a job. The quiet analyst cracks the code, and the sales lead reads the clue out loud.

Teams in separate breakout rooms solve the same puzzle against the clock

Virtual escape room for team building and other formats

Below are the virtual team building activity ideas we host for remote teams. You pick the game that fits your group and your goal, and we run it from the first welcome to the final score.

Virtual escape room

Teams solve a chain of virtual team challenges in a browser and try to break out before time runs out. It's a strong game for virtual team building because it needs talk: one person sees the lock, another has the code.

A virtual escape room for a corporate event can carry your company's own story and inside jokes. Prefer a room your team can walk into? See our escape room team building page.

Virtual trivia and game show

A host runs rounds on screen, and teams buzz in from their breakout rooms. We can write questions about your company, your products or your people. The same format works as a trivia round inside a company-wide call.

Virtual scavenger hunt

Teams race to find things at home, snap photos and complete short challenges. The hunt gets people off their chairs and shows a bit of their lives off camera. You see the task list in advance and can strike any item. It works well for coworkers who've never met in person.

Virtual holiday party

A virtual team holiday party with games, a host and prizes for the winning team. It can sit inside your year-end call or run as its own evening. We also build a virtual party around a product launch or a company milestone.

Seasonal games

We change the theme with the calendar. Fall themes run in October, and spring themes fit a quarter kickoff. In January, a new year round opens with goals and predictions. In December, a virtual team advent calendar gives the team one short challenge a day.

Virtual karaoke and light rounds

Lighter rounds for a virtual team social: virtual karaoke, drawing games and quick polls. It's the easiest format for a Friday afternoon, and it works as a closer after a long all-hands call.

What's included in each virtual session

You show up as a player, not as the person fixing the link.

  • A live host. Welcomes everyone, explains the rules and keeps the energy up from start to finish.
  • A moderator for each team. Joins the breakout room, helps when a team gets stuck and keeps every voice in the game.
  • One scoreboard. Every team sees the standings between rounds, and the winner is clear at the end.
  • Your content. We can add your logo, company trivia and team names to the game.

What shapes the quote

You'll get a custom quote for your group, and it takes minutes. These things shape the quote:

  • The game format and how long it runs.
  • The number of players and teams.
  • How many hosts and team moderators you need.
  • Custom content: your trivia, logo and story.
  • Kits shipped to players' homes, if the game uses them.
  • An office room with audio and a screen for a hybrid group.
How we quote

What we bring from live events

A shared scoreboard and a host who keeps people playing come from our live events. These two show how it works.

Four Racing Simulators for a Capital Group Employee Social in Los Angeles

Four racing stations at a Capital Group employee social fed one leaderboard, so every driver competed with the whole room. After the event, we sent the final standings to the client. Your online game ends the same way: one table, one winner, results in your inbox.

Branded Racing Simulator for i2c at FinovateFall, New York

At FinovateFall in New York, a live leaderboard pulled visitors back to i2c's booth to beat their own times over three show days. Booth staff saved about 51 contacts, and i2c has kept working with us. The lesson for a remote team is simple: a visible score makes people want one more round.

What a game looks like on screen

These frames show the host view, a breakout room and the scoreboard.

  • A host welcomes a remote team on a video call before the first round
  • Four coworkers in a breakout room work on the same escape room puzzle
  • A team shows found items to the camera during a virtual scavenger hunt for remote employees
  • Team standings between rounds of virtual trivia for corporate events
  • An office group plays from a meeting room while remote players join on the big screen
  • A live leaderboard at an in-person i2c booth, the scoring idea we bring online

IT and security questions

Your IT team checks our game like any other outside link, so it gets the answers before the invite goes out.

We run the game on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Webex, on your account or ours. Players open the game in a web browser, with no app to install. If your company limits outside links, we send IT the list of addresses ahead of time.

For a hybrid group in an office or a venue, we send insurance documents to the building on request, the same way we do for our in-person events.

Why remote team building activities fall flat

Online team building events usually go wrong for a few known reasons, and each one is easy to plan around.

  • No score.

Without standings, the game turns into a quiz nobody tracks. We show the scoreboard after every round.

  • Rounds that drag.

People drift when a round runs on after the answer is clear. We keep rounds short and end on the final score.

  • Tech surprises.

A blocked link or a broken breakout room eats the start of the session. We test with you before the day.

  • The organizer has to run it.

You can't host and play at once. Our host runs the event, so you get to compete.

How an online team building game runs

Our online team building activities follow the same steps, so you know what happens from your first message to the winners' list.

  1. Step 1: You send the basics

    • Date, time zone, number of players, platform and what you want the session to do.
  2. Step 2: You get a quote

    • It lists the format, hosts and options.
  3. Step 3: We shape the game

    • Format, length, custom questions and team names.
  4. Step 4: We test the tech

    • A short call with you to check the link, breakout rooms and screen share.
  5. Step 5: Your team plays

    • The host opens the session, moderators join each team, and the scoreboard updates between rounds.
  6. Step 6: We send the results

    • You get the final standings to share with the team.

Who runs your session

  • Host. Opens the session, explains the rules, reads the scores and announces the winners.
  • Team moderators. One per breakout room. They answer rule questions, give hints when a team stalls and keep every player involved.
  • Tech producer. Watches the platform, moves late joiners into their teams and fixes audio and screen share on the spot.
  • Event lead. Plans the session with you and stays your contact from the first message to the results.

Four roles run your session, and each one has a clear job.

Remote team activities in any time zone

Your players can be anywhere. Send us their time zones, and we'll set the start time and match a format.

A team spread from Seattle to Orlando can play at lunch on the East Coast and mid-morning on the West Coast. If part of the group sits in one office, we can bring audio and a screen to that room. We have two bases, Los Angeles and Orlando, and work across the U.S. If your company works distributed all year, see how we work with remote teams.

Questions

Which game should we pick?

Games where teams have to talk to win: a virtual escape room, trivia, a game show or a scavenger hunt. Pick by group size and how much time you have. We'll suggest a format when you send your request.

How long does a virtual team building event last?

Our hosted formats run 60 to 90 minutes. Shorter rounds fit inside a regular meeting.

Do you have a short icebreaker for a weekly meeting?

Yes. A 15-minute trivia or drawing round can open a weekly virtual team meeting, a kickoff or a virtual team lunch. For a weekly meeting, we can plan a short series of rounds. Tell us how much time you have on the agenda.

Can you run a game for a large group?

Yes. We split a large group into small teams with their own moderators, and everyone competes on one scoreboard.

What about a small group?

A small group can play as one team against the clock. A group of six can play an escape room or trivia without breakout rooms.

Can we play on Zoom?

Yes. Zoom works, and so do the other platforms in the IT section above.

Will this help a new team get to know each other?

Yes. Mixed teams put new hires next to people they haven't met, and the game gives them something to talk about. Book the game soon after new people start, while they're still learning names. Tell us if you want the teams mixed across departments.

Can you add a game to our virtual retreat?

Yes. A game works as an opener on day one or as a closer between sessions. Send us the retreat agenda, and we'll fit the round into it.

Can you host our year-end party online?

Yes. We build the virtual holiday party around team building games, a host and prizes, and it can fit inside your year-end call.

Can part of the team play from the office?

Yes. Office players join from a meeting room, and remote players join from home, on the same game and scoreboard. See our virtual and hybrid events page for full hybrid production.

How much does virtual team building cost?

Every event gets a custom quote. The quote section above lists what shapes it.

Do you also run team building in person?

Yes. See all our corporate team building formats, from simulator races to outdoor games.
