Office Holiday and Work Christmas Party Ideas

Our office holiday party ideas start with one rule: give people something to do together, and the party runs itself. Below you'll find office holiday party themes, games and formats for a team around one table or a company in a ballroom.

The short answer

An office party fails when guests have nothing to do. Pick one theme and one activity that mixes departments. A race, a photo booth or a gift game gives people a reason to leave their usual group. Food and drinks matter, but nobody remembers the canapés.

Then fit the ideas to your headcount. A small office can book a long lunch on a weekday. A large company needs a room plan, sound and several activities running at once. For dates, budget and a timeline, read how to plan a company Christmas party.

Office Christmas party theme ideas

Work Christmas party themes tell guests what to wear and give the room and the photos one look.

  • Winter wonderland. White and silver decor, paper snow and a hot cocoa bar. It works in any office without a big build.
  • Ugly sweater party. Guests bring the worst sweater they own, and the room votes. The only cost is a prize.
  • Decades night. Roaring twenties, sixties or eighties: one decade for the music, the dress code and the playlist.
  • Ski lodge. Plaid, a fake fireplace on a screen and warm drinks. Good for a team that wants cozy, not loud.
  • Fire and ice. Half the room in red and orange, half in blue and white, with teams named after each side.
  • A summer theme in December. A Hawaiian luau works any month. Capital Group held a luau-themed employee social in its office, with racing simulators on one leaderboard.

Dress your staff to match. At an aviation-themed customer evening at Hangar 21, our flight simulator operator wore a suit with pilot accessories to match the theme.

Holiday party themes for work that include everyone

Not everyone on your team celebrates Christmas. Call it a holiday party or an end-of-year party, and pick winter, decade or color themes over religious ones. Themes like these let every guest dress up without a second thought.

Work Christmas party activities for adults

Good activities give quiet guests a reason to join and loud guests a place to compete.

  • Racing tournament. Guests race the same track, and the fastest laps go up on a big screen. Give a prize to the winner and a second prize to the slowest lap.
  • AI photo booth. Guests stand in front of a 65-inch mirror and get turned into holiday characters, then take home a print. See our AI photo booth rental page.
  • White elephant gift swap. Everyone brings one wrapped gift under a set limit, and players can steal. It's the cheapest idea on this list.
  • Holiday award show. Hand out joke awards: most replies-all, best desk plant, fastest coffee run. Keep it kind.
  • Casino night. Blackjack and roulette tables with play money, and real prizes for the top stacks. Our casino night tables come with dealers.
  • Wish tree. Partner with a local charity, hang gift tags in the office and wrap the gifts together at the party.

Small office Christmas party ideas

A small company can do what a large one can't: sit at one table and talk. A small team doesn't need a venue at all.

Book a long lunch at a restaurant with a private room. Run a potluck with a dessert contest. Take the team to a cooking class or an escape room. These options cost less than a catered evening.

If you're not inviting partners, hold the party in work hours. An evening or weekend party without plus-ones leaves partners at home and makes people choose.

Office Christmas party ideas for large groups

A large party needs a plan for the room, or people stand by the bar until they leave. These ideas help a big crowd mix.

  • Zones. Put food, quiet tables and activities in different parts of the room, so guests move around.
  • Several activities at once. One photo booth for a few hundred guests means a long line. Two or three stations keep it moving.
  • One screen everyone sees. Put the race scores or the photo stream on a big display near the bar.
  • Sound for the toast. Speakers that cover the whole room and a wireless microphone, so the CEO doesn't shout. At a Capital Group employee celebration on an outdoor plaza, one AV setup carried music and announcements across the whole space.

Holiday party venues to consider

Your office is the easiest venue. There's no travel, and weekday dates are always open. Check the building's rules for loading, insurance and the freight elevator first.

Restaurants with private rooms suit a team of up to a few dozen. For a large company, look at hotel ballrooms, rooftops and unusual spaces like a hangar or a studio lot. Fridays in December book first, so a Thursday or a January date gives you more choice.

Virtual Christmas party ideas for work

A remote team holiday party works too, if it's short and has a plan.

  • Shipped kits. Send cookie, cocoa or ornament kits, and decorate together on camera.
  • Holiday trivia. A host runs rounds in breakout rooms, with one shared scoreboard.
  • Sweater contest. Everyone turns on the camera in their worst sweater, and the team votes in the chat.
  • Gift swap by mail. Draw names a few weeks ahead and open the gifts live.

Keep a Zoom party under an hour. For hosted games, see our virtual team building options.

Holiday parties we plan and run

If you'd rather hand the party to someone else, we plan it and bring our own activities, sound and operators. We have two bases, Los Angeles and Orlando, Florida, and run holiday parties across the U.S., including the East Coast and Florida.

Holiday party questions

What are unique corporate holiday party ideas?

A racing tournament, an AI photo booth with holiday looks, a wish tree for a local charity or a summer theme in December. Pick one that fits your team, not all four.

How do we get coworkers to mix at the party?

Give people something to do in the first half hour. An activity with a score or a photo gets guests talking before the speeches start.

What are good holiday party ideas for a small business?

A long lunch, a potluck with a contest, a cooking class or an escape room. Keep it in work hours if partners aren't invited.

Should we call it a Christmas party or a holiday party?

Call it a holiday party unless everyone on your team celebrates Christmas. A neutral name and a winter theme keep everyone comfortable.

What can guests do if they don't like games?

Photo booths, gift swaps and award shows don't need any skill. Some guests prefer to watch a race and cheer, and that's fine.

How do we plan a party on a small budget?

Hold it in your office on a weekday and pick free games, like a white elephant swap or an ugly sweater vote. Spend the budget on one activity people will talk about.

How much does a company holiday party cost?

It depends on headcount, hours, venue, food and activities. We don't keep a price list. Each party gets a custom quote, and how we quote explains what to send.
