The short answer
Pick a theme your venue can carry and your guests can join without a costume. Then add one activity that belongs to it, so guests meet the theme on the floor as well as on the napkins.
Capital Group chose a Hawaiian luau for an office social and booked four racing simulators at a Capital Group luau social. The shared leaderboard gave the whole room one contest to follow.
How to choose a theme
Four questions settle most of it: what the party is for, how many people come, where it happens and what you can spend.
- Goal. A thank-you party can be loud and silly. A client evening needs a theme that fits your brand or the conference around it.
- Headcount. Big crowds need themes with several stations. Small teams can go deeper, like a murder mystery dinner.
- Venue. A hangar suggests aviation. A rooftop suggests a summer theme. A ballroom can be anything, which makes the choice harder.
- Season. Outdoor themes need a weather plan. Holiday themes book up early.
- Dress code. Make costumes optional. Offer props at the door for guests who skip the outfit.
Business party themes that work
Each theme below comes with an activity that keeps it alive after the welcome drink.
Gatsby party and the Roaring Twenties
Art Deco gold and black, jazz, feathers and suspenders. A Gatsby party is easy to dress for, and nearly everyone owns something that passes. The activity that fits best is a casino floor with real tables and dealers. Our casino night rental brings full-size tables, dealers who teach the rules and play money.

Hawaiian luau
Leis at the door, tiki torches outside, a fruit-heavy menu. The activity that belongs here is surfing. A surfing simulator with a leaderboard turns a luau into a contest, and the crowd around it cheers every fall. We ran one at EF Academy's luau party, at an outdoor evening party on campus.
Aviation and "take flight"
This one fits companies in aerospace, travel or logistics, and any venue near an airfield. At Take Flight with Sysmex at Hangar 21, guests sat in a flight simulator cockpit. Our operator wore a suit with pilot accessories from the organizer.

Hometown pride
Build the party around your city: local food, local sports, local music. Capital Group built its I Love LA summer social on beach culture and local sports. Guests surfed, played VR baseball and VR hockey, and took AI photos with themed looks. The same idea works in any city: in Orlando, it could be the Space Coast, citrus groves and the local basketball team.
Corporate gala
Black tie, a seated dinner and an awards segment. Pick a theme that works in formal dress, such as Gatsby, Hollywood or winter wonderland, and keep the activity elegant: a casino table or an AI photo booth with a red-carpet look.
Western night
Hay bales, bandanas, barbecue and line dancing. Add a mechanical bull rental and you'll have a crowd and a story for Monday morning. A line-dance instructor gets shy guests moving.
Decades night
Pick one decade so the playlist and the dress code agree. The eighties work well: neon, cassette props and an arcade corner. Our arcade rental brings classic cabinets that need no explaining.
Carnival or county fair
Popcorn, cotton candy, ring toss and prize tickets. It suits family days and summer picnics. Carnival games rental gives you booths with a staffer at each one.

Hollywood and awards night
Red carpet, a step-and-repeat banner and awards for the team. An AI photo booth lets guests pick a movie-star look and leave with a print. Keep the awards short and funny.
Game day
Team jerseys, stadium food and a big screen. Add VR sports or a soccer simulator and split guests into teams by department. It suits sales teams and anyone who likes a scoreboard.
Halloween and costume parties
Costumes come naturally in October. For an after-dark activity, a VR zombie shooter fits the mood without fake blood on the carpet.
Winter wonderland
White and silver decor, warm drinks and a hot chocolate bar. It's a safe pick for a company holiday party because it avoids any one religious holiday.
Fall corporate event themes
Harvest table, apple cider, plaid and a pumpkin-carving contest by team. A fall theme works well outdoors before the cold arrives, and it fills the gap between summer picnics and holiday parties.
Earth Day theme ideas
Earth Day falls on April 22 every year. Plan a low-waste lunch, a tree-planting or cleanup outing and reusable giveaways in place of plastic swag. Our guide to sustainable events has more ideas.
Around the world
Food stations by country, a passport card that guests stamp at each one, and music to match. It suits global teams and companies with offices abroad.
Corporate meeting themes
A meeting theme is a short line that ties the agenda together and shows up on the slides, the badges and the stage.
- Sales kickoff. Racing language works well: "Pole Position," "Next Lap." Put a racing simulator in the break area and the theme becomes something people can touch.
- Launch or growth year. "Take Flight" or "Liftoff," with a flight simulator in the lobby.
- Reorganization or new strategy. "One Team" or "Same Page." Pair it with a team challenge where departments mix.
- Customer conference. Build the theme around the problem your customers came to solve.
Corporate retreat themes
A corporate retreat theme should match the purpose of the trip: "Reset" for a wellness retreat, "Build" for a strategy offsite, "Explore" for a destination trip with outdoor activities. Keep it light. People came to talk and rest.
Where themes go wrong
- Decor only. If nothing on the floor matches the theme, guests stop noticing it in ten minutes.
- Costume pressure. Some guests won't dress up. A required costume makes them feel left out.
- Inside jokes. A theme only one team understands leaves everyone else outside.
- No weather plan. A luau on a lawn needs a rain plan and a flat surface for the equipment.
- Theme and activity at odds. A quiet wine tasting and a loud arcade in the same small room fight each other.

Questions
Which themes work for a small office?
Pick themes that need little space: decades night, Hollywood awards, game day or a fall harvest lunch. One activity station is enough for a small team.
What should guests wear to a Gatsby party?
Suits, suspenders and flat caps for men. Fringe dresses, pearls and headbands for women. Tell guests that a hint of the era is enough.
Which themes suit a client event?
Themes that fit your industry or the venue. An aviation night for an aerospace client, a hometown theme for a local customer event. Leave the silly themes for internal parties.
Which themes feel fun without being cheesy?
Hometown pride, around the world and game day. They give guests something to talk about without asking them to dress up.
Can you match the activity to our theme?
Yes. We pick the station that fits the theme, brand the screens and graphics, and our operators can wear themed costumes. For more inspiration, read our list of corporate event ideas.
How far ahead should we plan a themed party?
As soon as you have a date and a venue. Popular dates in December go first. Short notice can still work, so ask even if the party is close.
